Ebisuya - Ebisu House

Ebisuya is a small 7-8 seat counter soba and udon soup place. Check out those prices on the menu below!! The restaurant's name, Ebisu, most likely stands for the Japanese God of Fishing and Commerce.

Outside door. Top says "Soba - Udon"

As with some of the places on this blog, one might also be hesitant to step inside Ebisuya. The place has a ticket machine with no English, no pictures, and there is no English spoken.  For many, that's three strikes and your out. But I hope I can give you enough information and confidence to step inside Ebisuya and other places like this and order confidently.

Parking: No
Best for a quick lunch
Smoking: Couldn't tell. Didn't see anyone smoking
Location: See the blog map. About 2-3 blocks East-Northeast from Yokosuka Chuo station located on a street corner.
Price: Very low

Friendly service behind the counter

Ebisuya is a simple no nonsense place. There is not much too look at inside other than the cook and the somewhat cluttered kitchen. No decorations or effort put into the look and feel of the place. Folks came in, ate, and left just about in the time it took me to decide what to order.

You'll put your money in the ticket machine, pick what you want, and give your tickets to the lady behind the counter. She'll ask you if you want Soba or Udon. Most people seemed to be ordering Soba so I went with the trend.

All the individual parts of the soup are already prepared, so all that needs to get done is dip the soba into the hot water for a few seconds, add the soup, the condiments, and then you're eating.

Ticket machine - couldn't believe these prices at first.

You can see that all items are in the 300-500 Yen range.

I've put this picture in here so that the prices are visible. The translated menu (ticket machine) is below.

You can see the general pattern on the ticket machine. The left most item is the most basic, then (from left to right) you add a (raw) egg yolk, a boiled egg, seaweed, seaweed with raw egg, and seaweed with boiled egg. Simple to more complex.

The tempura is the blue row and follows the same pattern. The tempura is a precooked tempura "disk" of vegetables.

The red items are smaller things you can add on. Big bowl, rice, extra tofu, extra seaweed, etc.

And you can see they have a curry soba or udon too.  Note that the ticket machine does not say soba or udon. You will just tell the server what you want when you hand the ticket over.

This is not a place you'd bring the family or kids for dinner I suspect, but that thought wouldn't be out of bounds. If you'd like to experience sitting down in a salaryman's place where the service is brisk and light on pleasantries, then try this place out for lunch or a quick dinner - and at bargain prices.
