Gyoran-tei Seafood Restaurant

Gyoran-tei seafood restaurant is on a dead end road so the chances of walking by and discovering it are slim. But this place is surprisingly close to the Navy base at Yokosuka. It can be found on the map here.

魚藍亭 Gyorantei kanji decodes to "fish," "setting a fish net," and "tei" which we've seen in other restaurants which means restaurant or pavilion.

Stepping into Gyorantei one is surprised at the size of the place. As you enter you'll be hit with the obvious nautical theme and then descend into a lower section where you'll find seating at a counter, or in individual booths where you remove your shoes first.

Behind the seats at the counter are a few tanks holding some live seafood. Didn't get a good look into them but did see plenty of squid.  Gyorantei serves up all kinds of seafood be it sushi, sashimi, or fried. There are plenty of options from each to choose. The menu selection is large. The combined English and Japanese menu is below.

The place gave me the feeling of going back in time - from the looks of the interior to the looks of the head waiter/owner dressed in a suit and tie. They also operate the Yokosuka Navy Curry restaurant next door supposedly with recipes that go back to the Royal Navy of 1908. Their website has more information.

One thing their website will tell you that their menu does not is that they serve up cooked giant tuna heads. They need advance notice, and the prices vary from 7500 to 12,500 yen. This is quite a discount from Kurobatei.
You no longer have to travel 45 minutes down to Misaki, now you can get your tuna head 5 minutes out the main gate! I doubt you get the performance you would at Kurobatei - and you can't say you ate a place that Andrew Zimmern did - but it would be so easy to try it here since it's so close.  Unfortunately, there is a limit of 3 fish-heads being served per day. A menu caution like that can only be born from a past lesson - so they must be popular.  Reserve yours today - they are going fast!  You do need to give them advance notice (one week ahead preferably) if you plan on trying this delicacy. Keep in mind that one fish head can serve many people.

For tuna head cooking notes you can see my other post.  It's one of the most popular posts on the blog for reasons I've yet to figure out.

I have not had a tuna head at Gyorantei (yet), so if you do, please send me a note and tell me about it.

Their menu is going under revision/renewal now but a few of their menu pages are posted below. If you go to the restaurant you'll see more available.
