Koh Ran Chinese

There are many Chinese restaurants in Yokosuka but this is the first I've written about on the blog. In part it's precisely because there are so many, and none of them stood out. But I recently found two good Chinese restaurants and Koh Ran is one of them.

Entrance on the second floor
Koh Ran is a restaurant whose entrance I've walked by many times but had no idea it was there. A food loving friend introduced me to Koh Ran and recommended trying it out. It's located right across the street from Sakaiya Mall, and is on the same street as Baan Chiangmai Thai restaurant. You can find it on the blog map.

The street side entrance-way looks like you are going into an office building. You'll walk around to the escalator and take it to the second floor. The restaurant has a nice large dining room, and for a minute you could be in Hong Kong or Beijing perhaps. You'll see a mix of smaller tables and a few larger ones with the rotating platter in the center - sometimes referred to as a "Lazy Susan." Which begs the question. Who invented the "Lazy Susan" and did the Chinese have anything to do with it? The answer still is not clear, however, more on that topic can be found in this Smithsonian article.

B lunch in the back, C lunch in the front
If the plates above look a little small in the pictures above, there is a reason for this...actually...two - wait, make that three!. First, the plates are small. Second, I have a bad habit of eating (and so does someone else...) before the pictures are taken!  And third, unbeknownst to me, my lunch companion ordered kind of a half plate of the main dishes!  The B lunch was a tofu and beef I believe? The C set was a chicken and veggie plate.

Above is the D set. With normal size plates. Very tasty and satisfying.
The D set was a black vinegar type sauce dish with chicken. Excellent.

The set also came with rice, tea, soup, and the dessert you see below.
egg drop soup
I do believe this is egg drop soup, and a very delicious egg drop soup it was. The food here may not be served in large quantities, but it is prepared carefully and with quality.

Dessert
The dessert is a classic Almond flavor gelatin dessert with fruit. Very tasty. You can make your own if you like or buy a package at the store. The package looks like this

Koh Ran has an excellent menu with English, Japanese, and Chinese. The lunch menu though is only in Japanese. So I've provided some English subtitles below.

You can find this restaurant along with their full English menu at this link. To find their menu, click on the middle tab on the top row.

Below is an example of their regular menu. Don't let the prices scare you. This just happens to be the abalone page with is expensive.

A more expensive lunch option below. You get more plates and more food!
