Many of you have found the new Sanwa supermarket just a short distance from the main base. As with most grocery stores, it's good to eat before you go shopping. The "Nojima Mall" where the market is located also houses a restaurant called Sumiyoshi.
If you're an aficionado you will recognize the name. There is another Sumiyoshi tucked away on a tiny alleyway in central Yokosuka. The two restaurants are part of the same group - Hanae. There are big differences between the two restaurants though. Sumiyoshi I - as I will call it - in central Yokosuka, is a hiding place, peaceful, and has a warm toned interior. Sumiyoshi II however, is a bright as day place, with families and kids, lots of noise, and busy with people walking back and forth with their self service water and tea.
The other big difference is the menu. Sumiyoshi II has a menu much more aligned to the average American palate, but still mostly all teishoku, or set meals. Sumiyoshi I has only one tempura set lunch and a whole lot of sashimi plates. While the newer restaurant at Nojima mall does have fresh sashimi, they have many more cooked dishes available. The pictures on the menu tell the story.
They also have what may be the smallest salad bar in Yokosuka. I didn't take any photos, but there is a little bit of vegetables and fruit available. One visit, with one small plate is 200 Yen. They don't say how high you can stack that plate, as I witnessed one lady do, but I'm sure you can still get your 200 Yen worth.

Sumiyoshi is in the same building as Sanwa Market and can be found on the blog map.
