Thai Erawan

Thai Erawan Yokosuka is an excellent choice for Thai Aficionados.

Located nearby the train station, across from TGI Fridays, and just a few feet from the auto-yakitori machine
It's a comfortable,  no smoking place where you can enjoy some excellent Thai food.  Find it on the blog map or by clicking on the location link at the very bottom of the post.

Cook hard at work
Unless you know where you are going, it's easy to miss Thai Erawan. Although they have a menu and a small sign out front (see the last photo below), it's surrounded by many other distractions making it easy to walk right by. A sleek, modern elevator inches from the sidewalk awaits to whisk you to the third floor. You can also use the small Thai flag waving from the 3rd floor window as a landmark.

There are two Thai places here actually, one on the third floor and one on the fourth. Generally you want the one on the third floor. Beware of the small elevator - if you load more than 3 people in, it may not move. Get rid of the one passenger who is most likely bogging you down and continue your journey. He can catch up later.
I think there might be some stairs too, because I thought I saw someone mysteriously arrive from the direction of the back of the restaurant, but I never confirmed this. There has to be stairs right? Like in case there is some reason we need to escape quickly? Gotta be.  I thought about this for a while, and after a bit more research and checking Google street view, there is an adjacent roof next door that can be jumped onto. All is good.

Thai Erawan has been in business since 2001. It serves Thai food based on flavors from the middle of the country near the town of Phitsanulok, where the chef is from. But unless you're a true Thai aficionado it's just really good "Thai food." For those who crave the heat - you'll be able to get it here. Just tell the staff how you like it.

We ordered some "low spice" dishes which still drew sweat. But the taste of all of them was excellent. The wait staff speaks English, Thai, and Japanese, which is really impressive. There is Thai TV via satellite too if you've been going through withdrawal.

Erawan is an "Elephant God" that is very large, white, and has many heads. I'll leave further details to your own curiosity and research.

My friends at Yokosuka Ichiban have a nice post with more information about Thai Erawan and were able to get the shy staff and cook to pose for a picture.

Course sets are available for lunch for under $10. Dinner course sets start at 2500Yen per person with a minimum of two people ordering.

Photo lineup (clockwise): Minced shrimp and chicken, spicy beef salad with rice, good looking shrimp fried rice, and chicken with coconut sauce.

As I said earlier, these are all excellent dishes with complex flavors and presented really well.

Their menu is posted on their facebook page here.  You can then page through all of the dishes.

Clockwise: Barbecue pork (spelled with a c),basil seed dessert (two ss), thick menu, but not as imposing as it looks, Thai Erawan sign (タイエラワン).

The menu is in English, Japanese, and Thai. If you don't read, they have pictures of every dish.

You can see from their menu above they are open every day. But check their facebook page - they often are closed on Wednesdays.

Various photos and a mango smoothie.
